A Matter of Midwifery...Giving Birth on Local Matters: October 29, 2009:
October 30, 2009 10:17 AM PDT
"Local Matters: Where Local Folks Drop By To Talk About Local Things That Matter." This episode of Local Matters takes host Joe Hendricks out of his childless comfort zone and into the world of midwifery, prenatal care and child birth -- subjects not typically on Joe's information radar. This episode features excerpts from a prerecorded phone interview with the Ina May Gaskin - "The Mother of Modern Midwifery" - an interview that precedes her weekend visit to Sarasota to participate in the "Maternal Health Care In The 21st Century: Sarasota and Beyond" panel discussion taking place at the Hyatt Regency Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3 pm. This event is open to the public. For more information contact Laura Gilkey at 941-915-8115. Ina May Gaskin will also be on hand for "An Evening With Ina May Gaskin" taking place Sunday evening at 5:30 pm, again at the Hyatt Regency. The dinner event includes music by Radio Free Carmela & The Transmitters, a silent auction, a cash bar and book signing by Ina May. This event is sold out. Joe is joined in the WSLR studio by guests Maggie Davenport (a Sarasota mother of two who birthed both her children using a midwife) and local midwife Harmony Miller, from The Rosemary Birthing Center here in Sarasota (www.rosemarybirthing.com) In between Ina May segments, Maggie and Harmony share their thoughts on midwifery and a more natural approach to child birth. The music featured in the episode of Local Matters was provided by Tanya Radtke, from her debut CD "Begin." Featured tracks are "Tiny Hands" and "Goodnight." Tanya Radtke & Friends will be appearing Saturday, Oct 31 at the Old Packing House Cafe in Sarasota.
